Kirsten Gorman Testimonial - Port Maquarie 2007 PB

Hi Will,
Over the last few weeks I have been meaning to drop you a line and thank you for all your help with over the last 12 months & especially Ironman 2007. I can honestly say I really enjoyed the whole experience (I can hear you now – she obviously wasn’t trying hard enough) but that is not entirely true…..there were some hurt locker moments (surely??). Hey IM was a PB – at last!! Seriously Will, there is no doubt your coaching had a lot to do with this and I look forward to perhaps a PB at HIM distance in the coming months.

Renaud Herington Testimonial - 3rd Place Long Course World Championships 2006

Will. Mate,
Just a quick note to say thanks again for the level of support and encouragement you have shown me over the last 3 months. I set a pretty big challenge for you to whip me into world champion state, and to podium for the second time is quite awesome..
Across all three legs, i felt strong and well trained and was testament to your programme. Experience is simply the missing factor in clenching that world title, and something i feel motivated and excited to tackle again.

I would recommend you to anyone looking for a balance of smart training and mental preparation.

Once again, thanks, and here is to the next one!!!

Cheers
Renaud

Anthony Yeates Testimonial - Port Maquarie Ironman 2006

Hi Will
Have been meaning to call/e-mail you for ages to say thanks and stuff... but it has been a bit hectic... i got engaged to Michelle just after i got back from Port and everything has been crazy!
I am very happy and satisfied with how it all went up in Port. I did 11:20 (491st overall) which broke down as-

65.26 for swim (673rd overall)
6:07 inc trans for ride (614th overall)
4:07 inc trans for run (428th overall... therefore my strongest leg)

Swim time was good... you have seen me in the pool... i was just happy to finish and not be a million miles behind after the swim. It was really rough (people everywhere) but the drafting effect was big, and almost overcame the current we had to swim against on the second part of each lap. I got out of the water not puffed or tired at all and with a full reserve of energy for the rest of the day.

Ride was funny... not how i expected it would go. First lap was fine, the hills were good, there were people everywhere (so i could sorta draft into the wind on the way out) and coming back was easy in the good tailwind. Second lap I ate heaps and drank heaps and was sweet by the time i got onto the third lap. The third lap was OK, i made sure I ate and drank heaps and the wind had backed off a bit and it went easily and at a good pace. My actual ride time was a fraction over 6 hours and i still felt pretty good and had heaps of food/drink in me when i set off on the run.

The run was good, as good as i could have hoped for really. I had no real idea how i would go in the run. I sorta knew i would be able to hold it together for a little while, but didn't know if i would be able to hold it together the whole way or if i'd blow up and die. As it turns out, i held it together till about the 39km mark, and by then the emotion and happiness of being nearly done was more than enough to get me home. The run course is good (if hard) and suited me as a runner. My run splits and time were really consistent, and I was stoked to be able to run the whole way... no walking except at aid stations (i took water and coke at each station, walked while i drank water at the water table, ran to the coke station, walked while i drank the coke then ran again). I was pretty buggered by the end of the run and know i could not have gone any faster on the day (which is really satisfying) but was amazed by how well i held it together. Off the bike i wasn't even stiff or anything for long, i hit a pretty easy stride within the first km or two! I ate quite a few salt tabs on both the ride and run and this helped heaps too... barely a twinge of cramp all day.

At the finish i still felt really good and it was cool to have my girlfriend and Mum and dad and some mates there to cheer me home. I didn't need any medical help or for the old tigers to carry me to the tent or anything, and once i got a space blanket (i got quite cold/shivers once i finished) was good as gold and back out in the stands to see Davo finish which was cool.

All told mate I am really stoked with how it all went. In January when i spoke to you i was so worried about even getting to the start line, let alone finishing or doing a smoking time. I really enjoyed the training and i have been saying to everyone... the training program was "simple yet genius". I got so much done, didn't get so tired that it ruined my life (i was bloody tired but i was training for an ironman so had to expect that), didn't get sick (protein powder... gold), didn't lose motivation (a real killer of my training for other stuff) and i did seriously enjoy the training. If i can, next time i do one i will definitely do the Wed morning long session like this time, it gave the week such structure and was really good for my confidence (i thought to myself that it was like stealing an extra session on everyone else) and was so important for getting myself comfy after long distances on the bike. I am stoked that I was able to swim 3.8km without drowning, and ended up with a respectable time for the swim (which is part miracle, part drafting in the swim). The ride/run combo's when i was training got really annoying... when i finished riding at say midday and then had to go for a 30 min run that was the last thing i wanted to do, but even i saw the value in them and the fact that i could run easily straight off the bike on the day shows how helpful it was.

So as i said, all told, stoked! I am definitely going to be back for another one and will definitely go back to Aeromax when i do. Davo has done two before... not super fast (say 13:20 and 12:40 or so) so the fact that he could knock an hour off his time shows how effective your training approach is. It DEFINITELY made the difference for me! I am not sure when i will be back.... it might not be this year cause I now have t o get married and we might go overseas for a little while (a year or two) but i am definitely back for one some time soon. Plus i know heaps of places where i can improve/go faster so Prowse/Kean had better watch out next time.

Thanks heaps mate!

See you soon
