Huskinson National Long Course Championships

Congrats to Adam Holborow on his 4th place at National long course on the weekend, it was a great race for Adam, at only 21 Adam is going gangbusters. Not such a great day for the 2 tim's Berkel off the back of some nasty miles for Port and Robbins in 6th and 7th but they got through on a tough day for the both of them. Richard Hobson got a 6th 40-44. Patrick Tait- 4th 20-24 and Mike Mahady had a great race and a big PB of 4:30- well done mate.

Aeromax Geelong Results

A quick round-up of Geelong 70.3 Results. Berkel 3rd pulled out a strong race under the Current huge Load for Ironman as did Nicole Ward 5th. Adam Holborow had a did off the front of the bike and ended up with a string race as well. Our best Age Cat result came with the ever improving Hayden Armstrong and Damien (juggs) Davis who qualified for Florida as a bonus to their Ironman preps, well done fella's. There were some pretty major problems for Christie Sym and Bern Ward on the course but they refused not to finish. Strong races also from Bec Eveleigh and Sam Turley.

A big shout to Paul martin who knocked out a 30mins PB, Paul also swears blind by the run/walk ratio and Aeromax coach Will Carroll is doing a great job.

I guess I have to take some heat for everyone being very tired at this race but with Ironman only just around the corner it makes it hard to make every post a winner, some races have to be used as part of that plan.

Busselton Ironman Report

Christie Sym 2nd in her first Ironman

Busselton finally dished out the day that everyone knew it was capable of. The day developed into a windy, extremely hot race. Our crew had a very toppsy turvy sort of day. Our Busselton Ironman defender Tim Berkel had a great start in the swim out 4th but was vomitting heavily by the time he hit the change tent, he rode strongly on the front all ride for a 4:34 but as soon as he hit the run the stomach problems started again and he was forced to walk out the run - still he finished and well see Tim winning his next outting I'll bet money on it. Nicole Ward, Adam Holborow and Karen McElligott, Stewart Crowley all suffered the same fate as Tim and were very sick on the bike.

Alison Fitch decided wisely not to start in Busselton. She had hip surgery earlier in the year and this was to be her first race back and she has been training the house down. Her marathon flight from the US though made her hip tender and after long discussions we came to the conclusion that it wasn't worth the risk and she will race instead in New Zealand in Jan over the Half Ironman. Ali has been working hard on her bike strength and she also has a new weapon in much improved run mechanics and cadence so we are looking forward to big things from Ali over the coming months.

The revelation of the day as I expected was one Christie Sym who got a little lost in the swim and came in about 10 mins adrift of Gina Crawford. Christie soon put that to rights with a 4:55 bike split and the fastest of the day for the girls by over 4mins -the deficit on the run got down to under 4mins but Gina was too smart to let it get any closer and Christie finished 2nd overall in her first Ironman with the 2nd fastest run of the day @ 9:20. At just 25 years of age in her first Ironman all I can say is god help the women in her next Ironman, I've never met anyone with such mental strength and latent talent -she is going to explode in the next 12 months and she has no fear of anyone.

Bec Eveleigh made massive improvement. Bec and I talked about her racing pro before this race and she bit the bullet and went for it. Just as well because she raced to a 55min pb and 6th place with a 9:50 -she rode a 5:08 and ran a 3:30 on a brutal day and she raced very smartly indeed. Both Christie and Bec work full time as Nicole Ward does so that makes their efforts that more impressive. Go the girls.

Stuart Fitch despite having had a hard time on the run won his 55/59 cat easily by 15mins and has qualified for Hawaii. Stuey wanted to thank Anton Kapel who helped motivate him on the run when they came together, Anton has done many preps with Aeromax over the years and is a great bloke, his help to keep Stuey going contributed to his win so thanks Anton from Stuey.

Bern Ward had a big day with a pb and a 3rd in the 40-44 cat. Bern's improvment over the last few years has been very steady - he always follows a program to the letter and it has all paid off this season as he has been on fire in every race so far and on the podium every time he has raced. At Busso he finally realised his dream of racing in Hawaii by winning a spot. Good on you mate were proud of you.

I haven't caught up with everyone yet but Laurent Doyen had a strong day at 9:57. Jason Mann went an 11:24, Hamish Deery a 12:05, Jason Barker a 12:27 and Mark Booth a 13:11. I think everyone who finished this thing would agree that it really was a payback day in terms on conditions and If you finished this thing you were winning. A very big DNF rate of 12% points to a very hard day at the office. Well done all.

Huge weekend of racing for crew

Florida 70.3 World Championship

We had 2 athletes in Florida for Worlds Hayden Armstrong. Hayden had a great day and racing to a 4:05 finish in the 25-29 cat and a fantastic 6th place. Kelly Ingham, Coached by Stew, Kelly has really developed over the past few months and had a strong race with a 5:05 finish. Great efforts.

...............

Sheparton Half Ironman

Tim Berkel continued his run towards Busselton Ironman with a 2nd place finish. Denmarks Jimmy Johnson tore off to a big lead and a scorching 2:08 bike split and Berkel set an incredible run split of 1:14:08 to get within 40 seconds of Jimmy at the finsh. Berkel has continued to add to his run speed over the last 6 weeks and I think we can look for a blistering marathon from Tim at Busso.

...............

Forster Long Course / 3 men in the top 5

We had 3 of the overall top 5 men at Forster long course. Mitch Robbins was only just pipped for the win by Dave Mathews and there was only seconds in it. Adam Holborrow got out to over a 3 min lead on the bike but was given a card for blocking, how do you get a card when leading by 3mins? apparently he was blocking the motor bike while he passed lapped competitors - you TA guys have got to be kidding!!! fair enough when someone is blocking other competitors or drafting but this call I'm sorry is pure BS, regardless Adam served his 4mins in the bin and still managed 4th place -3mins back, has to be frustrating. Tim Reed rounded out the top 5 for us with a 5th place finish after having some cramp problem in the swim that had him have to stop. Well done guys.

................

Gatorade Juniors at Robina Gold Coast

Onother strong day for our juniors. Brad Clarke took out the 16-19 age cat at only (16). Jessie Fleming got 3rd in the 15-16 cat. Greg Hall (16) got 5th place in the 16-19 cat. Alex Hackett and Lucas Flannery had very string races and improved well. Paigey Single had a tough day day out in the opens and was flat, probably more a sign of the amount of work she has been doing training wise of late but she is putting in some hard work and will bounce back.

Junior action @ Robina left to right- Jessie Fleming, Greg Hall focusing and Paige Single.

Lennox Head under 12 Triathlon / Merrick Giles gets his first win

Following in the footsteps of his hero and mentor (Tim Berkel), 8 year old Merrick Giles had his first triathlon win at the Lennox Head under 12 triathlon. Merrick has been having a great season and has lowered his aquathon 5km time from 32 mins to 23 mins in 6 weeks and has all the adults running scared. In a crack-up twist he maintains that kicking Berkel's arse is his prime motivation - "Go woonsy"!!!

Seriously Jo Scotcher did a fantastic job of putting on a great race for the kids and it was very well supported by the local community.

Aeromax on Fire at Port Maq Half Ironman

Tim and Mitchy on the run leading together

Wow what a day at Port for us. 7x top five cat finishes. Tim Berkel is starting to reach boiling point and took the race after cruising the run course with a 75min spilt and looked like he wouldn't have blown out a candle. I'd seriously hate to be racing Tim Berkel in Busselton Ironman in 4 weeks because he is dropping bombs with his form (I've never seen him look better) and anyone who is going to beat him is going to need to run very quickly. The big news of the day was that we also took 2nd overall with 21 year old Mitch Robbins who ran on Berkels shoulder for the first 8km's or so, Mitchy went on for 2nd overall in his first venture in the pro ranks -man what a future, well done mate.

Nicole Ward got 2nd overall and a strong race after Hawaii only a few weeks back - she did struggle with some heavy stomach upset but still managed the fastest run of the day and is looking good for a Busselton Ironman challenge. Bern Ward improved once again going 2nd place in the 40-44 cat and his consistency has been great so far this year. Sam Turley stepped up with his first podium in the 25-29 cat for 3rd and a top 20 overall, Sam has improved massively and has taken 10 mins off his half swim time alone and it won't be long before Sam starts winning 25-29.

My good mate Damien (Juggz) Davis got a 4th in the 40-44 cat with little leadup - good job old son. Laurent Doyen had a strong day out with a 4:51 before Laurent goes travelling for a few months, well done.

Our own Aeromax Coach Stewart Crowley went a 5:09 in a come back race and Stewy is doing Busselton Ironman as well and this was a training race, good job. Jason Mann pbed on his way to Busselton Ironman also, well done. Mark Booth is also racing Busso and has had a pretty hard year of it living in sub zero in Bathurst but raced Port anyway going a 6:13 on very limited training the last few months.

Karen McElligott had a tough day on the run with foot problems but you'd never know it with Kaz because she never stops smiling, running around the course asking how everyone else is going - what a trooper, and a strong race despite the discomfort for 5th place in the 40-44 cat. Well done.

We are really enjoying things at the moment as all of our devlopment athletes both Pro and Age Group are doing very well.

World Long Course Champs / Fergusson clean sweeps 4 World Titles

We only had a small crew of 5 at the World long course champs in Perth. Kevin Fergusson achieved the impossible by winning his 4th World Title in 5 weeks, not only did he complete his goal but a scant 2 weeks after his Hawaiian Ironman win he won the Perth worlds by a staggering 22 mins.

Matt Lamont put together another really strong race to finish 15th in the 30/34 cat with a 4:34. Matts wife Nat Lincoln placed 31st with a 5:43. Jeremy Millar went a 5:15 and Leonie Cook had a tough day by her standards with a 6:16 finish.

Well done all.

SMFA rules / Aeromax Juniors do well at Gatorade Race 1 - Raby Bay

"Gregwa" Hall                     SMFA - Smiling faced assassin - Jessie Fleming

Our juniors raced their second race of the season on Sunday. The juniors did well with SMFA (smiling faced assassin) Jessie Fleming winning the under 16 cat easily with a great run, Jessie is a great trainer and never misses a session and her improvement of late has been great - well done Jester. Greg Hall came 5th in the 16-19 age cat -which is kind of harsh when you consider Greg has only just turned 16, he had a great race and raced very strongly from the start. Alex Hackett and Lukas Flannery have also been on the improve and they both put together a very strong race in the under 16 cat. Paige Single gave her all at the Ballina Aquathon on Friday night winning easily and running an 18:30 for the tough 5km's, but she was a bit tired at Raby and raced open in a strong field of girls - she still managed a 7th place overall.

Well done campers,

Aeromax in Hawaiian Ironman World Championships 09

Big day in the Lava fields for the crew, everyone got home which was great. The race got very windy and extremely hot - what you would expect of the Hawaiian Ironman I guess but from all the reports I've had so far that made things pretty tough.

So down to the nitty gritty-

Kevin Fergusson is coming good with his promise to try to win every world championship race there is to win by winning the World Title in Kona. He led from start to finish in a time of 9:33 - that is smoking for the 50/54 year age cat. There is pretty much no doubt that Kevin is the fastest over 50 year old triathlete over all distances on planet earth. So far in the last 4 weeks he has amassed a World Aquathon title, a World Olympic Distance title and now a World Ironman title. That is just ridiculous, but if he goes on and wins the World Long Title in Perth in 2 weeks time it would have to be some kind of incredible record. Well done mate -hats off.

Tim Reed yesterday competed in his first Ironman, yes his first -he qualified at Kona 70.3 for Hawaii. Tim went for it leading the 18-24 cat for a very long time before being passed for the win by a German triathlete. Tim raced on with a very smart race to finish on the podium in 2nd in the 18-24 cat in a time of 9:18. What a debut for a young bloke at Ironman. A podium at Kona is a big thing and many athletes in the 18-24 cat who've finished on the dais there have gone on to great careers in the sport. Tim is a very talented fella and as he gains experience he is going to start making a nuisance of himself for the overall as he did at Yeppoon where he challenged for the win all day. Well done Tim.

Hayden Armstrong had another strong day finishing top 20 in his 25/29 cat with a 9:41. He was very consistent all day and raced very smart.

Nicole Ward had a tough day in her first pro race in Hawaii. The fact that all of the worlds best pro triathletes are in one spot is hard enough but when you work for Westpac in cold winter Sydney and the rest of the girls are at altitude training and sleeping - it kind of makes Hawaii a very hard nut to crack. Still Nicole enjoyed her day and gained a hell of a lot of experience that she can use for future races. She went on to a 10:20 finish despite some very nasty dehydration.

Brian McGovern finished in 10:38 in the 50/54 Cat. He loved the race and found the bike conditions very tough but went on to a 3:28 run split and a great top 20 finish. Brian is one of those very positive people, is a pleasure to coach and is always looking for the way forward. Well done mate.

Stuart Fitch had a consistent and strong day in the 55-59 cat going a strong top 10 in 11:05 for 8th in the cat. These older Cats are getting crazy when you consider it wasn't a fast day either. Well done Stuey.

I haven't heard from Richard Hobson or Anthony Golle yet but Hobbo went a 10:49. Hobbo lives in Bathurst -when he left it was about 2c and that was warming up so not the most contusive environment to racing in the 45c heat and wind of Kona. Anthony Golle had a 11:23 finish, Anthony also qualified for Kona through the Kona 70.3 earlier in the year. More when we hear from these guys.

Gold Coast Half Ironman

Gold Coast Half Ironman was run in hot, dry and windy conditions yesterday. Tim Berkel in training for his Busselton Ironman defence had a bit of a flat day on the bike but came back with the fastest run of the day in 76mins to finish in 2nd place to his of late training partner Lennox local Clayton Fettell who rode an incredible 2:07. Berkel will be back training In Lennox as of this week to train with Clayto and Simon Thompson and he is looking good for a Busso repeat.

The revelation of the day came from Christie Sym who ran through everybody with the fastest run split of the day in only her 2nd triathlon to finish 2nd overall. Christie comes from an adventure racing background is serving a crash course in triathlon with us and I think she is still a long way off what she is capable of, remember her name because I think in the future at only 25 years of age she is going to turn long course triathlon on it's ear.

Bec Eveleigh also had a very strong day in her 2nd race in the open cat by taking 5th overall and a new pb of 4:35-only a few minutes back, Bec had the 2nd fastest run of the day to Christie and looked very strong all day, a little more work on the swim will see Bec right up there. We now have a very strong stable of girls racing. Ali Fitch, Nicole Ward, Bec Eveleigh and Christie Sym are all doing Busselton Ironman and will be gunning for the overall.

Bern Ward set a new a PB 4:29 and finshed 3rd in the 40-44 cat, this is Bern's 2nd poduim after Yeppoon and he has reallt stepped up this year.

There were also PB's for Michael Mahady who looked really solid and also Jason Mann who PBed by 17minutes despite getting dehydrated. With 8 of the faster crew missing in Hawaii for the Ironman it's really pleasing to go so well, Well done.

Paige Single and Jessie Fleming had great races at Woolgoolga Triathlon

Our North coast crew had a good day out at the annual Woolgoolga race in Coff Harbour. Paige Single won her first overall race in the opens, not bad for a 17year old. Well done also to local North Coaster Clayton Fetell for the winning the open mens. Jessie Fleming won the 16-19 agr cat. Matt and Nat Lamont came 2nd in their cats respectively and Shane Flannery and Leonie Cook both won their Age Cats as well. It's a great race in Coffs with a great atmosphere.  Great races were also had by Greg Hall and Alex Hackett.

Berkel and Robbins 1st and 2nd for Aeromax clean sweep in Port Douglas

Congrats to Tim Berkel and Mitch Robbins doing a 1-2 at Port Douglas Long Course last weekend. Berkel, Brian Fuller and Matt White dominated up front on the bike, with Berkel taking control during the run to win by 12 minutes. Mitchy Robbins ran through the field to come all the way through to 2nd place. The race was run in very hot, windy conditions. Well done fella's.

Update Kevin Fergusson is dual World Champ on Gold Coast

Just an update on Kevin, he actually won the ITU Aquathon Wolrd title as well as the Olympic distance championships in the 50-54 cat, making him a dual World Champ. As if that wasn't enough he went out on the Sunday in the sprintman and finshed 5th overall -blitzing the 50-54 age cat in the process. What a weapon. Apologies for missing the obvious and congrats on a fab result.

NEWS 14/9/09

Kevin Fergusson wins World Title at Gold Coast

Big congrats to Kevin who easily ran away with the World Title at the ITU Olympic distance championships in the 50-54 cat. Kevin is also racing the Hawaii Ironman World championships in 5 weeks and then the ITU World long course championships in Perth a few weeks after that. The ulimate goal would be to win all 3 which would be amazing and not entirely out of the picture for someone like Kevin, well done.

Brett Morgan also raced the ITU Olympic distance championships in the 30-34 cat placing 36th, Bretto was well in the hunt but had a tough final few km's but raced to a 2:03. Brett has made a fantastic comeback after a battle with testicular cancer and his effort has been inspirational to make the team and then to train on through winter in Sydney.

Ali Fitch 5th In Ironman Wisconsin comeback

Ali raced Ironman Wisconsin USA last night our time in her comeback race after the same hip sugery that sidelined Brad K. This race was basically a tester for the hip and the hip came through with flying colors so we can look forward to seeing a fully fit Ali Fitch on the line for Busselton Ironman in December. Ali will now go to Hawaii to help her Hubby Stuart prepare for the Hawaiian Ironman.

Aeromax Results @ Yeppoon / Everyone in top 5

We had people make the journey up to race Yeppoon for what was to be a hot, windy race. Tim Berkel had a solid day after a break from training to watch the Tour De France in Europe, I don't think Tim expected to be challenging for the win so that came as a very positive suprise at this stage of the game - Tim Tussled for the win with Matt White and finshed 14 seconds behind Matt.

Nicole Ward also had solid day for 2nd place, she was a little flat though due to her Hawaii prep but showed that her strength is taking shape, well done Cole.

Young Tim Reed had a great day and finshed 3rd overall, Tim is also racing his first Hawaii and it's always great to see new talent coming to the fore and I think Tim will be a force this summer as he develops further. The result could have been even better had he not lost his nutrition and bonked over the last 5km's of the run. Another young guy Mitch Robbins had a tough day and was throwing up violently all the way through the run, Mitchy still managed to win the 18-24 cat but he is destined for bigger things this summer. Remember those 2 names Mitch Robbins and Tim Reed - they are both going to do something over the next few years and it's great thats it's happening here with us.

Rebecca Eveleigh had her first race in the open division and although she found the racing very different from age group, she did manage 4th place, well done Bec.

Christie Sym had her first race after moving over from adventure sport. She's currently having a hard time getting the position and seat dialed in on a ITT bike after so many years racing on MTB and then she had the same problem and was throwing up violently during the run. I think for everyone racing these races it's a bit of a lesson to always try to take your own race nutrition because it's always unclear how the course fluid will be mixed and if you end up on a mix you are not used to it can really shut your stomach down very quickly. Regardless Christie still mananged to tough it out for a 5th place in the open cat and as with Tim and Mitch she is going to develop into a very good triathlete once she gets the small bumps out of the way.

Bern Ward also said he felt a little flat and it's sometimes difficult to race mid year when normally you are in SE phases of training. Regardless Bern still managed 3rd place in his cat so well done mate.

Hayden Armstrong has been training hard for Hawaii and unfortunately had a pretty nastly bike crash 5 days before this race so was racing with some pretty serious road rash as well as some deeper cuts, he decided to just race for training, He still managed 5th place in his age cat and looking is good for his Hawaii campaign.

Aeromax @ Yeppoon this weekend

We have a strong squad of athletes racing this weekend at Yeppoon Half Ironman. Nicole Ward is in awesome form as is Mitch Robbins and Tim Reed. Tim Berkel will also toe the line as well as a strong age group contingent with Bern Ward in very strong form as well as age group contender Bec Eveleigh. Good luck to Chrsite Sym in her first race after making the move from adventure sport. Should be a good day for the crew to make the furr fly.

NICOLE WARD 2ND AT IRONMAN JAPAN 09'

Nicole - very satisfied and very knackered after a ding dong in the final km's for the win

Nicole Ward put in a stella performance in Japan by achieving her first Ironman podium finish after placing second overall after a hard fight with Nicole Klinger for the win in the closing km's. Cole came out of the water about a minute adrift of Hillary Bicscay and Maki Nishiuchi and then kept the gap to around 5mins during the bike and then caught the chase group towards the end of the bike. Nicole then went to work on the gap between herself and the leader by running the first 10km's hard. Cole reduced that gap down to nothing by the end and the race and the 2 Nicoles came together over the closing km's, Nicole Klinger has a duathlon background so just had a little too much footspeed over the last few km's but what a smart race by Cole.

Nicole qualified to race Hawaii and will race as a pro. Nicole is living proof that you can live the dream while holding down a full time job. We are very proud of Cole's effort as another Aeromax athlete and Aussie stakes her claim to a pro career that is full of promise.

As weve said before, our whole bag is development and it's extremely satisfying to see our athletes develop over years and go on to races like this. Great effort, all guts.

Anthony Golle and Tim Reed both qualify for Hawaii @ Kona 70.3

Both Tim Reed and Anthony Golle qualified for the Hawaiian Ironman World Championships today in Kona at the 70.3. Anthony finished 6th in his Age Cat,  and Tim won the 18-24 cat easily and finished 9th overall in the process including pro's. We had 2 guys go over to race and both qualifed, that's a good hit rate.

Well done fella's.

Nicole Ward 3rd @ Busselton Half Ironman

Last week I headed over to one of my favourite race destinations in Busselton, Western Australia. Busselton is just 3 hours south of Perth and is a stunning location, with crystal clear blue waters and flat fast roads so you couldn’t ask for much more. I arrived there on Thursday lunch time which gave me plenty of time to de-stress from work and prepare myself for the task at hand.

I had a few weeks break after my Ironman race in NZ in March, and have mostly been doing aerobic base training in preparation for Ironman Japan next month, so I went in with a little uncertainty on how I was going to go.

It was quite chilly on race morning but it turned out to be a beautiful day with temperatures getting up to around 27 degrees and not too much wind- just the way I like it! I felt pretty good and relatively relaxed before the race start. The swim was a little hectic as there were stingers in the shallows so the first 100m out and coming back into shore, I was stung all over my face which wasn’t much fun.   I tried not to panic and ignored the pain as best I could. I was second out of the water and after a quick transition was off for the 3 lap, 90km bike leg. It took me a good 10-20km to find a solid rhythm but I felt really strong and much more comfortable with my new Vision Aerobars (thanks Mark!). I really enjoyed the bike leg today and I felt great throughout the whole 90km, which is a good sign for Japan next month. I tried out a new nutrition strategy which also worked really well, and aside from a few mishaps with fluid intake (as there was only one aid station on the bike), everything went to plan. I was only passed by one of the girls who was the eventual race winner, and I was off the bike in third place.

I hit the run and found my run legs pretty quickly. The run was 3 x 7km loops which can be mentally quite challenging. The heat was rising and I noticed so many people were cramping up so I took salt tablets and tried to ensure that I got as much electro, water and coke down as possible as I was worried I was a little bit dehydrated from the bike. Again, I felt strong for the whole run and maintained a steady pace throughout the 21kms. I managed to gain 3 minutes on 2nd place and had the second fastest run of the day. As always the finish chute is a great sight to see at the end of a long race but it’s even nicer when you make it onto the podium!

Thanks so much to my sponsors- Turramurra Cyclery, Pinarello, High 5 Nutrition, Blue Seventy Wetsuits and Foot Levellers for all of your support. Thanks also to my friends, family, supporters and coach Gilesy.
and a special thanks to my mum for your cheers of support on race day .

Brian McGovern wins in Ironman China

Brian McGovern is the head of the Commonwealth Bank Singapore. Brian and I have worked on his First Ironman assault - Ironman China 09'since last October. Juggling a full family life and heading up a bank is no mean feat on it's on let alone taking on Ironman as well. Brian yesterday won the 50-54 age Cat and also finished 28th male overall, he has also taken his spot to Kona. The race was run in conditions that can only be described as hellish, heat over 45c and nasty head winds made for a day that only the strong survived.

I think Brian is prime example of what can be done with smart training and a calm, positive outlook. He will be shooting us a race report in the next week or so.

Congrats mate on a great effort.

Aeromax @ Ironman Australia 09

Tim making Patrick work for the win

Another strong result from the crew across the board if not a smaller group this due to the Long course worlds being in Perth and short course worlds on the Gold Coast as well as most of our pro's not racing Australia this year.

Tim Berkel had a great day and provided a great spectacle racing shoulder to shoulder with Patrick Vernay for 18km's but when patrick pumped out 3km's at 3:40km pace it got a bit tall for Tim and he had to back off - then Patrick copped an attack from Pete Jacobs as well so Pat certainly deserved his win and showed his class as an experienced athlete. For my part as coach -"extremely" proud of Tim, we had to bring him down after Busselton Ironman as he had raced a whole US season - so it wouldn't have been wise to try to race the Australian summer season. This result shows how much guts and talent he has - there was a lack of real sharpness on the marathon when it counted but by the time Roth rolls around in July he's going to be big trouble and he gets another crack at Vernay and co. At 24 there is a need to be careful so we are covering that with careful planning and his consistency is showing that. Wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of Tim Berkel race sharp in the US and Roth in July, so watch this space in the coming months as his OS campaign ramps up. Well done mate.

Good solid day by the age group crew and some real highlights there such as Nick Teifilo going 3 hours faster than last year and having a blinder, stoked for you Teioff. Another cracker story is Damien Davis coming to us 5 weeks before Ironman after his first half Ironman at Geelong and asking if I could coach him to Ironman, having never riden further than 80km's and never run further than 20km's, Damien went a 10:17 on 5 weeks of a miles Build over a scant 5 weeks, he loved it and he looked good, buggered If I know how you did that mate, but good job.

My mate Richard Hobson realised his dream of qualifying for Hawaii so we are stoked for him. Now he has to knuckle down to a winter of training in 2c Bathurst for 40c Hawaii but he's as tough as nails so will be right.
Stuart Fitch dropped bombs on the 55-59 age group with a big PB of 10:12 and won easily also qualifying for Hawaii, he did it too easy and looked great, well done Stuey.
Sam Turley had some problems on the bike that we won't go into but still managed to PB by an hour in his 2nd year in triathlons, he went 9:39 and at 24 is looking good for some more big time gains.
Great days and big PB's went down for Matty Lamont from Lennox, Larent Doyen and Hamish Bowman from Sydney.
Mark Booth from Bathurst continued his improvements on the tough Port course and after only a short time in Triathlons is going really well and loving it.
A big hoy also to Darren Williams who was going gang busters out there this year.

There were a few days that went south but I guess you have to expect that, Bec Eveligh who we expected would fair well in the womens race overall suffered on the day from Hyponatremia, which basically water intoxication which causes low soduim levels in the blood, this is a problem when the conditions are cooler than what you are used to training in and there were quite a lot of people who suffered from it on Sunday, regardless Bec raced on in a lot of pain and still went 4th in her cat. Bec is racing Roth so her time is coming. Nick Duncan suffered 3 flats in a row and just ended up racing for fun and hence, the frustration of what comes down to a one day event.

For our part another inspirational day - getting everyone home always makes us feel really good.

We are looking down the barrel of a good year on the elite side of things as well, Tim in the US and Europe for Roth, Nicole Ward in Japan. A refreshed Alison Fitch is going to be a bigger handful than anyone realises in her US season with Ironman Coure d Alene in June and then the half circuit with Hawaii as the final, I've never seen her so fresh and healthy looking and she's extremely hungry. We also have some very talented Young guys in Mitch Robbins and Tim Reed who are coming up fast and I'm calling those 2 guys as big talents for next season on the half IM circuit. Going to be a lot of fun.

Juniors place at Nationals

Big congrats to both Paige and Bridget Barnes who are 2 of our Junior athletes who train on the North coast. Bridget has a surf background and Paige is a former track runner and they are both part on the National Talent ID program, whereby we transfer talented young athletes from other sports who are interested in a possible career in triathlon.
Paige single came 5th overall in the senior race In Devenport Tasmania in the national allschools triathlon, Paige qualifed after a strong race at the NSW allschools triathlon in Penrith. Paige had a great race at Nationals beating some of the better athletes on the ITU junior circuit on the day and only finishing a minute down to the winner so a close strong race, all of this augers well for Paiges future and by next season things should really start to happen for her on the ITU junior circuit.
Bridget Barnes has only been in the Triathlon program since Oct and commits to triathlon full time from 09' Bridget showed some big potential during the year on the Junior ITU circuit by racing well up the field and well beyond her time in the sport. Bridget really suprised herself in Perth at the National Surf Titles by finshing 3rd in the 2km soft sand beach run, the triathlon training starting to show dividends. Both girls are showing big potential for the future and it's going to be fun to watch.

Ironman New Zealand update

A quick update of what happened with our small crew at New Zealand last weekend. Nicole Ward had a strong day with 7th place overall in the women's and has cemented her place as a strong pro racer. Hayden Armstrong strained his back badly 3 days before the race which was a bummer because he was in great form, still he managed 5th place in the 25-29 cat and qualifed for Hawaii - he has also qualified for the 70.3 worlds in Florida so it's going to be a big year for Hayden. Reno Herington was in great form and was actually riding with Hayden and as they went through some road works Reno who is coached by Will -blew his tyre to bits which is a real bummer because he went on to run a 3:18 - makes you wonder what could have been, still it's there so well done mate. Donna Richards went a 12:12 on the course and Kara Hobbs who is coached by Stew had a great race going 12:54 on very -very limited training. Bern Ward went a 10:05 on the course, Haven't spoken to anyone other than Hayden- hence the lack of details right now.

Geelong Half Ironman

We had a only 5 athletes make the trek to Geelong for the Half Ironman and by all reports it is now a very big race and the field was super strong for both male and female. Our 5 all raced well. Bec Eveleigh again had a great race on her march towards Ironman winning the 30-34 age cat easily and finishing right up there overall as well. Hayden Armstrong is on his final weeks for Ironman New Zealand and had a great day finishing 3rd in the 25-29 cat and his goal of getting a Hawaii spot in New Zealand is looking very good, Hayden lives in Tasmania.

Stuart Fitch again smashed his age group with a win, also taking out the 70.3 series for his age group and qualifing outright for the World 70.3 chapionships in Clearwater Florida, awesome job Stu and Ali you'd better watch yourself, haha.

Sam Turley from Vic and Nick Duncan from Queensland both had solid days and are new to Aeromax programmes so welcome fellas and well done.

Mitch Robbins had a great day going a 4:03 and finishing right up amoungst the pro's. Mitch is only 20 years old and is improving very quickly with each race, Mitch also trains with Tim Berkel so things are looking good for Mitch to be racing very well by the time next season rolls around and I have a feeling he'll be another younger athlete who'll be pushing the front in another 12 months, well done Mate.

Vale Thomas J Tucker

I recieved the heart renching news today that freind and Aeromax athlete Tom Tucker passed away on Sunday night. Tom had a long battle with a brain tumour and raced Ironman while raising funds for brain tumour research through his website www.t4tcan.com a link to Tom's new site is at - http://www.t4tcan.com/2009/ Tom not only excelled in Ironman events by racing sub 10 hours but he also qualified and raced in the Hawaiian Ironman, all the time raising funds and awareness for T4T.

From the point of view of Melanie and I, Tom taught us some very important lessons about what is important in life and most importantly about how life should be viewed. Tom's view was always the glass is half full.

We will miss Tom dearly and our heartfelt condolences go out to Wife Kim and daughter Annabella.

Grant and Melanie.

BERKEL WINS / NICOLE GETS 5TH / CREW PB

BERKEL WINS

Well what a day. Not much for me to say as I'm sure most people have seen that Tim won the race in 8:07. Tim showed maturity beyond his years in controlling and attack by Jason Shortis at the 35km mark of the marathon and sat back, ate, drank, didn't panic and lauched an attack of his own dropping it down to 3:20 km's to win by 4mins. The scary thing is he still has a lot of improvement left in him and this is just the beggining. One of Tims weapons is his attention and openess to efficiency and techinical development and that is a lesson for the whole crew I think. Nicole Ward again raced solidly and came away with another improvement with a 5th place finish overall with a 9:43, Cole is still very much under development and we can look forward to more from her as well. To get 2 of our athletes into the top 5 overall was a big buzz for us all considering Ali Fitch is having a break and we lost Bec Eveleigh to the flu in race week.

The rest of the age group crew also had a great day with pb's and positive races from all the crew we had there. Bern Ward, Pete Galov and Matt Thomas all went well under 10 hours and had very strong days. There were also pb,s from our own Aeromax coach Stew Crowley, Jody Parker, Mark Booth and a close to hour pb from Kirsten Gorman. Donna Richards pulled up as crook as rookwood during race week but still powered to a solid finish and thats guts.

A well done to our Danish mate Jimmy Johnson who attacked hard on the bike to lead the race into T2 then suffered badly before getting a 2nd win to finish 4th overall in 8:18, well done mate.

Port Macqurie Half Ironman (70.3) - 3 athletes in top 5 overall

A smaller band of athletes raced Port Mac as Busselton Ironman is just around the courner so some athletes used it for training and other opted to leave it out this year.

Tim Berkel used this race as a tester for Busselton and kept his IM training up until Thursday after having had a bad run in with some food posioning late in the week before and losing a little time he decided to press on for Busso with Port in the middle. Tim ran it very close again yesterday finishing 2nd to Cam Watt and Berkally did a great job of closing down a 4 minute deficeit to 30 seconds by the finish line, painfully close for Berkel who would dearly have loved to win on home turf, he did run the fastest run split of the day though @ 1:17 flat on tired legs, Berkel is firming as a major threat for Busselton Ironman and his patience and commitment to follow planning is paying off and he is consistently improving.

Nicole Ward ran a solid 3rd yesterday and took the swim prome after having some problems with her health at Gold Coast Half. Cole is also doing Busselton and was using the race as a tester to IM form, all indications are that Nicole is starting to hit some form at exactly the right time so look for a big result from Cole at Busselton also.

Rebecca Eveleigh backed up her great 3rd pace at Gold Coast Half Ironman with another top 5 performance with 4th place overall winning her 30-34 age cat in the process. The impressive thing about Bec is that as an age grouper she is still improving and if she keeps this up she'll have to go pro. Bec is in for Busselton also and I think this year we will see a massive leap forward in Bec at Ironman, it's going to be very interesting because she can bike and she can really run, well done Bec.

We had some great results from our Age Cats too with Hayden Armstrong going a strong 3rd in the 25-29 cat, Hayden is looking to Qualify for Hawaii in New Zealand early next year after a good performance at Ironman Oz last year and all indications are that he will do that. Hayden is from Hobart in Tassie, well done mate.

Everyone who raced for us had solid days - Paul Roberts, Nat Lincoln, Ant Hooper all had solid day as did our own coaches - Run coach Tom Buckley and Aeromax coach Stew Crowly.

So It's on to Busso and exciting to see what happens over there with so many athletes in good form we have a good chance at having a great day as a team.

Cheers,

Gilesy.

Forster Long Course 2/60/15

Small crew of athletes went to Forster for the Long course over the distance of 2/60/15. Tim Berkel again used the race as a training tool towards Busselton Ironman and again showed his stength and once again a decent turn of speed by finishing 2nd place 2 mintues back of ex world champ and Olympian Peter Robinson with a 2:50- finish. Berkels last race before Busselton will be Port Maq Half Ironman.

Matt Lamont had a strong race for 7th in his 25-29 age group and a 3:22. Bern Ward again had a strong race in the 35-39 cat for 7th place and also a 3:22 - funny thing is Matt and Bern don't know each other. Nat Licoln who is Matts wife had a strong race in 4:05.

Well done.

 NEWS 13/10/08

Appologies for the lateness of these reports but Gilesy has just spent the week in Canberra at the AIS NTID camp with some up and coming juniors.

Hawaii Ironman

Well done to Bec Joslin and Peter Mitchelmore for completing thier first races in Hawaii. Pete went 10:44 and Rebecca went 11:57, the first race In Hawaii is never easy so well done to both - sure well hear all about it when they get back.

Berkel wins Port Douglas Long Course

Tim Berkel travelled to Port Douglas on the weekend for another hitout on his Busso trail. Tim won easily in the extremely hot conditions in 3:47. Another job well done.

Aeromax Gold Coast Half Ironman Race Report

Great efforts at Gold Coast half ironman by the crew in general with 7 top 10 cat finishes and 5 podiums.

Tim Berkel threw down the gauntlet and chased hard to catch David Dellow on the bike and had the lead until about 6km's into the run with Dellow surging hard, Tim did a good job of keeping Dellow to under a 90 seconds because David has been doing a lot of short course for ITU and his speed is very good at the moment, so Tim again finishes on the podium with 2nd place. Timmy is now on his campaign for Busselton Ironman and they want to be looking over their shoulders because Tim is now bringing a new dimension to his Ironman racing in the form of speed - with that diesal motor now running turbo he's a good chance to cause a boilover and possibly even win.

Rebecca Eveleigh is starting to see her potential realised with an age group win and also placing 3rd overall, it's not a suprise to us and this should be the beginning of more to come from Bec, she stuck her neck out and had a lash and realises that she can now go the next level. Bec is also doing Busselton Ironman and a big PB should be on the cards.

Nicole Ward had another strong race but was a little flat from some problems with health - she still went on for a 4th place finish overall on her way to a Busselton leadup.

There were great races by Peter Galov and Bern Ward. Stu Fitch belted his age group again winning with ease a product of talent and the fact that having Alison Fitch as your wife and training partner couldn't be harming his chances. There were plenty of strong sub 5 hour races as well so good job by everyone.

Thomas Buckley won the 90-99kg cat and this is very funny because Tom if you are over 90kg then I'm 150kg plus, haha. Somethings gone south with the results there.

So this week we move on to Forster for age group world long course qualifier then on to Port Maq half Ironman where we will field another strong crew. Have a feeling this is going to be a big season as a lot of the crew are coming to a head with regard to strength and experience, it's going to be fun to watch.

Gilesy.
