Chris Dmitreiff @ Ironman Japan June 22nd

Chris used Japan as his first race back after a decent break from Ironman of about 18 months or so. His prep was good and very consistent. Chris had a strong swim for 52mins and the weather conditions on the very hilly course made life difficult with constant rain and that made for some slippery descents. Chris had a pretty bad bonk about 140km's on the bike from the constant rain, "that tends to draw up a lot of energy if you are not a big person". There is no coke in Japan until you hit the run so that makes life hard when you are bonking and can't get surgar in quickly. Chris rallied back hard to run back into 12th place overall with the 2nd fastest run split of the day and a new pb marathon run for him of 2:55 with a total time 9:03 over the extremely hilly course.

This was Chris's first race in some time so things are looking good for him to make a good charge at Busselton later in the year with some good race fitness behind him and the signs are all there that this could be good summer for him. Well done mate.

Berkel 6th @ Eagleman USA 70.3

Tim raced his first race on US soil last weekend at the Eagleman 70.3. Eagleman is a big Half in the US and had all the major hitters - Tim raced very strongly but was pinged for a blocking interference and a 4 min penalty - still he rode a blictering 2:09 for the 90km's so his strength is really coming on. Anyway below is his report in his own words. Well done mate.

Just a quick update on how I went at Eagleman 70.3, in Cambridge Maryland, USA.

Getting here was hectic, and I haven’t been feeling race-ready for the past few weeks.  One week before I raced Eagleman 70.3 (which is on the east coast of the USA), I was racing in northern Queensland, so it’s been a busy couple of weeks.  By the way, I won that race…

However, I was only home for less than 24 hours between my last race in Australia, to heading out for a 3 month racing schedule in the northern hemisphere.
My arrival into the USA was not so smooth, since the US Customs Officers, did not have records that I left the country last year.  It was a bit stressful but they finally let me in.  I arrived in Boulder, and was greeted by a few days of rain and cold, so it wasn’t the ideal lead-up to my first major race over here.
I arrived in Maryland on Friday afternoon, and then made my way to Cambridge, which is about 1 ½ hour drive from the airport.  Saturday was my preparation day, and I was a little intimidated by some big hitters that were entered.  TJ Tollakson (last years champion) was there, as well as Chris Legh, Paul Amey, Torenzo Bozzone (he’s a Kiwi, don’t let the name fool you), and Richie Cunningham who are all capable of taking this event.
It was a wave start, so it was just the 18 Pro Men in my wave.  Two got out with a strong start, and then there was a pack of five that just got away from me, and I just couldn’t catch them.  Coming into the swim to bike transition, I was only about 20 seconds back, but that was enough to miss the main pack.  I was riding with Viktor Zyemtsev for the first 20 kms, then Chris Legh and Chris Bagg joined us.
We picked up the pace, and Viktor dropped off, and we rode together until the 55-60 km mark where we joined back with the main pack.  I was relieved to see them and felt the race was now within my grasp.  The group worked well together and we were all swapping turns.  I checked with the Technical Official that was watching us to be sure my spacing was legal (and she assured me I was legal).  As I made my way towards the front of the pack, I passed one of the guys, and tucked myself in, when she rode up along side of me, and pinged me for Blocking.
I knew I had to serve a four-minute penalty, so I pulled into the next penalty box I could find, but in retrospect, I wish I had waited until the last box on the course, which was only about 5 kms from the finish.  Needless to say, by taking the earliest penalty, it left me out on my own for a longer portion of the ride.  Normally, I would have been furious about the situation, but thanks to Lucien from Cannondale, I was hooked up with an SRM Power Meter, and this gave me the tool, to continue the ride and I maintained a decent effort.  On the race clock, I posted a 2:13:31 bike split, but my SRM (excluding the 4 minute penalty) had me at 2:09, with and average speed of 42.4 KPH, which I am stoked about.
I started the run in 8th and it was the hardest run ever.  It was very, very hot with the temperature reaching the mid 30’s (90’s Fahrenheit) and 80% humidity.  I finally found my legs about 5 kms (3 miles) and started to run a few blokes down.  But then with about 5 kms to go I was gone, and nearly walking.  I was really glad to see the finish line and got a respectable 6th place finish.
It was so hot, and I was so smashed they stuck two IV drips into me, so all is good now.
I have a break from Half Ironman Races until the middle of next month, so I will give some more attention to my run, and work at some altitude up in Breckinridge Colorado.  Hope all is well, and I’ll keep you posted.
Cheers
Tim

Kona 70.3 - Ali 4th / Reno 7th

We had 2 athletes at Kona 70.3 Ali Fitch and Renaud Herington. Reno made a good fist of it in the very competitive 25-29 cat going 7th. The winds were apparently pretty relentless so well done mate. Ali was coming back from an injury that has seen her out of running for about 5 weeks but she tore up the course passing Samantha McGlone and hanging on for 4th overall - Ali has Ironman Corde A Lene in 4 weeks so the race was a hitout in prep for that and the signs are that Ali is heading back to very good form. Well done Guys.

Anel @ Worlds

A very big weekend coming up for Anel Stewart in her first ITU World Championships as an elite. I spoke to Anel today and she said she is being very looked after as a member of the South African Elite team and was feeling good despite all the travelling shes had to do in the last 6 weeks. She did say that the weather is freezing over there but is really looking forward to it. Best of luck Anel - we are all behind you.

Weekend Racing roundup

3 races were on for Aeromax athletes last weekend. Anel Stewart raced the ITU South African world cup and made a good fist of it for her first top 30 finish. After finding the swim pace white hot Anel dropped off a little and then pushed hard on the bike to bridge the gap to the lead pack - paid for that a little on the run but still building racing fitness so well done Anel.

Cam Good raced club champs for Warringah and while on an aerobic SE volume block still managed 2nd place overall - well done mate.

Nicole Ward raced Buss Half Ironman and faced an uphill battle with a crazy work load for Westpac leading in and then had mechanicals to boot. Nicole still managed 5th place overall with a 4:30 and a 10 min pb to top off a pretty stella season, well done Cole.

Shane Gallagher is a new Aeromax athlete in the 50/54 age cat and went on to a 5:32 finish.

NEWS 8/4/08

Ironman Australia Aeromax roundup.

Well another big weekend of Ironman madness in Port Maq. Some good races by our crew, some outstanding races by our crew and a few distasters that weren't related to fitness which is dissapointing.

First big call must go to Timmy Berkel who stepped up to play with the big boys in no uncertain terms, he went 8:44 with a 13 minute improvement from last year when he finished 7th. This year he rode very smart and controlled and then unleashed a 2:55 marathon to to pull to within 4 mins of the national title with the 2nd fastest run split of the day. At 23 Tim is without doubt this countrys biggest long course talent going forward. You can read about Tim's day in race reports.

We had some stella races and Pbs too - Big wraps to Laurie Shorton, Brad Eastwood, Pete Mitchelmore, Richard Hobson, Paul McClarnon for their sub 10 hours efforts - big pbs there and lot of happy campers. Well done. Michael Mahady was on fire. Matt Lamont had a big pb for 10:13 and the list goes on - sorry If I missed you out but the result across the board was great.

We did have some problems though. Poor Nicole Ward was swimming with Kate Major when they were swam over by an eager bunch of age groupers who kicked the crap out of the pair of them - Kate lost her goggles and cap and Nicole got kicked her in the face so hard that it split her eye open - Nicole tried to go on but pulled out in 3rd place on the bike unable to see and with concussion she was taken to hospital, might be time for a pro womens wave to save them from this sort of thing. Cole is in great form though and will race again soon.

Tom Buckley trained so hard and then watched it go south with 2 flat tyres and no mechanical support on course so was forced to pull out, Tom has trained like a demon so real bummer. Damo Boland had a miss adenture with his stomach and couldn't even keep water down so was pulled off course - take this as a warning that if gel doesn't agree with your stomach then you shouldn't be using it (ie) those with food intolerances should not use these products and there are alternatives. Bad luck Damo but he knows he has the form.

Wanted to make a mention of Bec Eveleigh who was taken off course dehydrated. Bec was well inside top 10 overall and was killing it, she got slightly behind the 8 ball with hydration on the bike and it bit her hard in the run so again it's very important to not even let yourself get slightly behind - If you don't pee by 120km's you should take in more - small amounts often. The one thing about Bec that is great is the fact that she races and races hard and she knows how to hurt - she has been on the poduim plenty this season with half Ironman and she won't die wondering. Bec is developing into a fierce competitor and keep the name in the back of your head as you'll be seeing it pop up a lot next season - she will be a very good Ironman triathlete before much longer.

On a stranger note need to mention Anton Kapel, Anton's job is very demanding and on top of his new family found it very difficult to train, in fact in trained twice - yes thats right 2 sessions in 3 months leading in and still wanted to race?? Anton went through in 15 hours where he has been going around the 11:10 mark. Well done Anton but If anyone wants proof why you need to train for Ironman -just ask Anton, haha.

Another one of our Lennox athletes Anthony Camalleri managed to shoot through his hand with a high powered nail/staple gun at work on the Tuesday before the race, he then spent the night in Hospital and they removed the massive staple that was 6 inches long the next day. Tony how you got on the start line and completed this race with a hand like that I'll never know.

Darren Williams had a great day and looked comfortable all day long, Darren is our cancer survivor and a role model to the whole crew. Also a well done to our little mate from Italy Michele Avaro, Michele is a great bloke and he pbed massively which was great fun to see. He can't speak a word of english but he had great time out here for our Ironman. Michele is also coached by Florian Knoepfel and Flo has done a great job with him - well done fellas.

Crew who qualified for Hawaii this year were -

  • Tim Berkel (not going)
  • Ali Fitch
  • Rebecca Joslin
  • Brad Eastwood
  • Peter Mitchelmore
  • Andrew Wyper
  • Shane Flannery

Congratulations to Ali Fitch who this week won the Northern Territory Sports Person of the year. Ali won from a wide range of sports and athletes after a fine year that saw her finish 5th at Ironman Australia, 2nd at Ironman Malyasia, 3rd at Ironman Swizerland and 4th at Ironman Busselton, not to mention a top 20 at Hawaii while sick. Anel Stewart makes the South African Elite Team for ITU World Champs in Vancover

Anel was last week selected to the South African Elite team for the ITU World Olympic dist Championships later in the year. Anel finished 5th in the South African Olympic trials and will now race NZ world cup next week then the South African Continental cup the week after.

..................................................................

A quick round up of Mooloolaba.

Cam good had a strong race to finish 11th in Open Elite, Cam went a 1:50 for the Olympic distn and had a strong swim run combo and finished off with a 32:30 10km run - Cam was actually a little dissapointed with his run. It's great to see Cam developing into a strong Pro athlete. Anel Stewart had a strong race to finish 41st in the ITU World Cup. A wrap also goes out to Josh McHugh (NSWIS) who finished one spot ahead of Cam and Joey Lampre (NSWIS Eap) the boys both train here in Lennox Head and are having a great season.

NEWS 26/3/08

A good luck call out to Cam Good and Anel Stewart for their coming races this weekend at Mooloolaba. Cam will race the open Elite drafting race and Anel will race the ITU world cup. Both are in good form with Anel finishing 5th in the South African Olympic Trials a few weeks back and Cam going under 15:30 at a canter in a 5km run ITT last week. Good luck guys.  Also throwing out a good luck to Simon Thompson who has been training here in Lennox for his assault on the last Olympic team spot.

..............................................................................

We are now a week and a half away from the Australian Ironman at Port Maq. All our athletes are in one piece and ready to roll which is always massively pleasing to get everyone on the line without major issues. A lot of people seem to be in fantastic Ironman form, I won't mention any names as I don't want to add pressure to those who are gunning for big finishes and they know who they are but I think some feathers are going to fly this year and can't wait to get down there and watch it all unfold. Big g'day and welcome to our Italian athlete Michele Avaro who is out from Italy to do his first Qzzie Ironman.

Below is our list for this years Australian Ironman. Best of luck to all and the work is done so it's all gravy from here. All that needs doing now is to get into the headspace.

Anel Stewart - South African Olympic Trials

Anel Stewart had a solid result in the South African Olympic trials finshing in 5th place overall and 4th South African. Anel was hoping for a poduim finish but has been carring a nasty injury from a bike crash earlier in the month. Anel will now race Mooloolaba and then New Zealand World Cups. Cam Good unfortunatly flatted on the course at the Oceania Championships in Wellington New Zealand on the weekend. Cam will also be racing Mooloolaba in 2 weeks.

Rebecca and Andrew qualify for Hawaii in New Zealand Ironman

Big call out to Rebecca Joslin and Andrew Wyper for qualifing for Hawaii at Ironman NZ. Both Bec and Andrew finshed in 4th place in their age cats. Bec has a very full on job so it's always great to see someone who works such big hours come up with a result like this, well done Bec. Andrew has just changed from elite cycling to triathlon and is on the plane to Hawaii on his first attempt at Ironman and at just 22 looks to have a bright future.

NEWS 8/3/08

Best of luck to Aeromax athlete Anel Stewart who will race the South African Olympic trials this weekend in SA. Anel will race Mooloolaba back here and then concentrate on the world cup races in Asia following that. Best of luck this weekend Anel.

Good Luck Cam

A quick note to say good luck to Cameron Good who will race the Oceania Championships on the 9th March in Wellington New Zealand. This is the do or die race for the last spot on the Australian Olympic team so the pace will certainly be on and Cam will amoungst it in the elite Field looking for a good placing in the Elite U-23 Cat. Cam has been working hard on his swimming with Jamie Turner in Wollongong and has really started to his straps so Best of luck Cam.

Ironman New Zealand

A quick update of our small New Zealand Ironman group.  Andrew Wyper had a strong race in his first Ironman with a 9:35 finish and 4th place in the 18-24 cat, Andrew is racing Port Maq Australian Ironman as well and at 22 is another young fella on the way up, well done mate.

Rebecca Joslin had a strong race in pretty windswept conditions going 4th in her age cat and another on the plane for her first crack at Hawaii Ironman in Oct - great job Bec. John Oleary had his first race back after a long illness and came up trumps with a sub 10hour time of 9:58, John should only get stronger from here. Steve Newman is another doing the NZ / Aust Ironman double and went round the first race in 10:05 finding the wind pretty challenging. Yound Chris Shaw raced strongly to 10:00 dead and 9th in the 18-24 cat. Good job all.

NEWS 25/2/08

Aeromax Fires @ National Long Course Championships in Huskinson.

The crew had some outstanding results at Huskinson, nearly every single person in our crew down there pbed and thats pretty astonishing considering most are in full mileage for Port Maq Ironman. At the sharp pro end we had both Nicole Ward and Tim Berkel finishing 2nd overall. Tims bike legs aren't too great at the minute with all the Ironman running but he stuck it to the field on the run with a 1:11 fastest run split of the day finishing 2nd to Leon Griffen.

Nicole Ward in the last 3 weeks before Huskinson in a bid to make a big jump forward at Ironman had run 93km's / 98km's and then the week before the race she ran 104km's, my thoughts were she would be racing to train, Nicole had other ideas winning the National Title and finshing 2nd overall to a Eurpoean Pro, what an outstanding first year in the pro ranks to take home a National long course title - well done to both Tim and Nicole and look out Port IM.

Ryan ONeill has been racing very well this season and went on to finish 8th overall in 3:54, he's also had some health issues recently so well done son. Prowsie is doing a great job with Tim Reed and he had a great race finishing 2nd in the 20/24 age cat and 13th overall.

We had no less than 10 top 10's in the cats out of the 14 who raced so a very pleasing result all round.

We also had Cam Good and Anel Stewart racing the enduro in the protour on the Sat before long course - Cam had a very solid race finishing 4th in a very good elite field. Cam's big focus now is Wellington Oceania championships on 9th March. Anel was coming back from a bike crash injury and finished 5th overall in elite Female. Anel is South African and is racing the Olympic triathlon trials in South Africa also on the 9th March. Good luck to both athletes.

A quick call out to our small band of very fit New Zealand Ironman this coming Sat. Racing are John O'Leary, Rebecca Joslin, Andrew Wyper and Steve Newman, Chris Shaw and Mike Vujcich. All are in very good shape so follow them on Ironmanlive.com on Sat.

Let the racing begin

Lot of racing going on in the next 5 weeks with the national long course champs in Huskinson on the 24th Feb and Geelong half Ironman on the 10th. Cam Good is racing under-23 Elite this weekend in Canberra and Anel Stewart, Bern and Nicole Ward are racing Canberra as well. Will give you all an update as it happens now the racing is starting in earnest again.

We also have a small group on the final big weeks into Ironman New Zealand and all are going very strongly so there should be some great results from this small group -

Ali Fitch is also in the run up to Ironman Malaysia and is looking to go one better than her 2nd place last year. Ali has been running 105km's per week for this race and it's taken us a while to build her up to the point where she can handle it, theres a very heavy field racing with Belinda Granger, Bec Preston etc but Ali is determined that this is her race so best of luck Ali.

We also have around 28 people in the lead-up to Port Maq Ironman so a busy time all round.

Tom Tucker

Just an up-date for those who know our Canadian and ex Aussie Aeromax Athlete Tom Tucker. Tom has had some difficulty over the last few weeks after more brain surgery and some haemorrhaging from a brain tumour that was operated on a while ago. The doctors are working to stabalise Tom's condition and find the right drug therapy.

This is just a note to send Tom, Kim and Bella all the best Karma from Aeromax and that we are looking forward to seeing Tom back doing what he loves to do best. If you are interested in Tom's Fund Raising for Cancer reaserch please visit his website - http://www.t4tcan.com

All the best thoughts from over here.
